Iran-linked hackers shut down British power plant

Cyberattack that halted the UK's electricity network

Iran-linked hackers shut down a British small power plant for four days, which, according to The Guardian, is the first successful cyberattack that halted a UK power station. The incident indicates Tehran's apparent escalation in retaliation against the UK for allowing the US to use British bases.

According to UK government data, the incident was related to a small-scale energy generator, which stated that there was no risk to the wider energy system at any point. A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero stated, 'This story relates to an incident affecting a small-scale energy producer, and at no point was there a risk to the wider energy system. The UK has a highly resilient energy system. We are working closely with the energy sector to protect infrastructure and ensure the highest safety standards.'
