An Iranian commercial vessel was struck by a shell on Sunday morning in the Strait of Hormuz near Hengam Island. According to IRNA, citing the governor of Iran’s Qeshm Island, one of the ship’s 10 crew members was killed and four others were injured.

Qeshm governor Hossein Amir Teymouri said the incident involved a container ship and remains under investigation. He added that the origin of the shell, its type, and further details surrounding the attack have not yet been disclosed.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Financial Times reported that since the military conflict around Iran began on February 28 this year, more than 70 commercial vessels have come under attack in the waterway. Before the war, the route carried about 20% of the oil consumed globally.

According to the newspaper, the United States and Iran are trying to impose their own rules in the Strait of Hormuz, with that confrontation including attacks on ships.
