India launches new platform for exporters targeting the US market

New Delhi is seeking to lift bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

India has launched an online trade platform designed to help its exporters find buyers in the US. According to Bloomberg, the initiative is meant to make it easier for companies to access the American market and support faster growth in bilateral trade.

The platform was introduced as India and the US continue negotiations over a trade agreement. The two sides had already settled the main terms of the deal earlier this year.

Despite high tariffs imposed by Donald Trump and New Delhi’s push to broaden its export geography, the US remains one of the most important markets for Indian exporters. Data from India’s commerce ministry show that, over the 12 months through July, the US accounted for about 20% of India’s exports.

Bloomberg said the figure underlines how difficult it is for India to replace demand generated by the world’s largest economy with other markets.

Last year, during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump, the two sides agreed to more than double bilateral trade and raise it to $500 billion by 2030. India’s commerce ministry said trade in goods and services between the two countries totaled nearly $141 billion in the year ended in March.
