Armenia plans to implement an IMEI number registration system aimed at ensuring the legal circulation of mobile phones. The Armenian government has stated the objectives of this regulation:
- to reduce the circulation of illegally imported mobile phones,
- to ensure equal and fair competitive conditions for legal importers,
- to protect consumers from phones with fake or altered IMEI numbers,
- to establish a unified registry for mobile phone registration.
“It is important to emphasize that the initiative is not related to the collection or control of citizens' personal data. The created registry will only store the 15-digit IMEI number of the device without any personal data.
During public discussions about the initiative, various questions and concerns were raised. Below we present the most frequently voiced opinions and reasoned clarifications,” the message states.
