Water Management Issues in Armenia

Hydrologist discusses water losses and lack of management

Water management issues in Armenia remain pressing, according to hydrologist Knarik Hovhannisyan. She notes that there are over 70 reservoirs in the country, but their effective use is a problem.

"We lose the spring flow very quickly, and the water flows to neighboring countries," says Hovhannisyan. She emphasizes that most of the reservoirs were built during the Soviet era, except for the Vedi reservoir, which was constructed in recent years.

Hovhannisyan also points out that more water is needed for irrigating agricultural lands, but the lack of management leads to water losses. "Water is sufficient, but we lack management," she states.

This year, there have been no issues with reservoir filling, yet the irrigation problem persists. "Excess water that accumulates in the reservoir flows to neighboring countries," she notes.

Hovhannisyan hopes that this issue will attract the attention of the relevant authorities, as managing water resources is crucial for the country.
