The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia, Arsen Torosyan, stated that the birth rate in the country is declining year by year. He noted that in 2025, 32,042 children were born in the country, in 2024 - 33,593, and in 2023 - 36,590. Torosyan emphasized that since 2023, there has been a steady trend of decreasing births.
In Armenia, there is an average of 1.7 children per woman of reproductive age, while in several developed countries, this figure is 0.8-0.9 children. Armenia aims to raise the birth rate to two children per woman.
Torosyan mentioned that measures need to be taken to prevent further decline in the birth rate, and he added that changing mindsets is also necessary.
Minister's advisor Roza Babayan noted that the age of first childbirth in Armenia has increased from 25 to 29 years, which, despite the risks, contributes to the growth of the working population and economic activity.
According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, from January to May 2026, 11,720 children were born in Armenia, which is 2.8% less than in the same period last year.
