Plastic bags, cups, and utensils will be banned in Armenia from 2027

Restrictions on plastic use will come into effect in 2027

YEREVAN, August 11. /ARKA/. The inspection authority for market oversight in Armenia reports that starting January 1, 2027, amendments to the laws on 'Trade and Services', 'Market Oversight', and the Code of Administrative Offenses regarding restrictions on the use of single-use plastic products will come into effect:

According to the legislative changes, from January 1, 2027, the sale and presence of the following will be prohibited in trade entities, catering establishments, mobile trade points, fairs, sales exhibitions, and street trading:

  • the sale and presence of polyethylene bags and sacks;
  • the sale and presence of the following single-use plastic or polystyrene products: containers, plates, cups, cup lids, spoons, forks, knives, drinking straws, and stirring sticks.

The ban will also extend to polyethylene bags and sacks thicker than 50 microns.

Exceptions are provided for:

  • polyethylene bags intended for weight packaging;
  • garbage bags made from recycled materials;
  • plastic containers with lids intended for weight packaging.

According to the Code of Administrative Offenses of Armenia, administrative liability is provided for violations of the new requirements.

The inspection authority urges entrepreneurs to take necessary measures in advance to align their activities with the legislative requirements coming into force on January 1, 2027.
