Arman Akopyan, the Armenian Ambassador to Israel, stated that about 80% of Israeli society believes that the country should have recognized the Armenian Genocide long ago. He noted that Israel's official position, which states that a unanimous government decision is sufficient for recognition, does not reflect public opinion.
“How can Israel, a country that experienced the Holocaust, not recognize the Armenian Genocide?” said the ambassador. He emphasized that the overwhelming majority of civil activists have always supported the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
Akopyan also pointed out that support for recognition is somewhat lower among the Russian-speaking segment, around 75-80%. He believes that the historical closeness between Armenians and Jews should foster a better understanding of the Armenian issue.
The ambassador added that the recognition of the Genocide will not affect bilateral relations, as Armenia has never approached other countries for recognition.
