The Ministry of Environment has submitted for public discussion a proposal to temporarily ban exports of whitefish caviar from Armenia.
According to the ministry, the measure is tied to an assessment of the natural reproduction of whitefish in Lake Sevan in 2025-2026 and to clarifying the timing of spawning stages. For that purpose, specialists from the Ministry of Environment, Sevan National Park SNCO and the NAS Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology SNCO carried out scientific fishing from December 2025 through February 6, 2026.
The ministry noted that, to ensure the natural reproduction of whitefish, a package of stricter measures is enforced every year from late November until February of the following year. Those measures are aimed at preventing illegal fishing during the seasonal ban on whitefish catches.
The draft proposes a six-month ban on exports from the Republic of Armenia of domestically originating whitefish caviar classified under EAEU FEACN codes 0302 91 000 0, 0303 91, 1604 32 001 0 and 0511 91 901 9 and belonging to salmonids.
