On September 10 in Prague, at the closing meeting of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan laid out the main priorities and overall vision of Armenia’s presidency of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, COP17.

Speaking at a session titled “Role of Science in Diplomacy,” he focused on how science and diplomacy can reinforce one another in responding to global environmental challenges.

Abisoghomonyan said scientific data and expert knowledge are essential for biodiversity policy and decision-making. In his remarks, he noted that science can support both a deeper assessment of existing and emerging risks and better forecasting and development of effective responses.

On COP17 preparations, the deputy minister highlighted the inclusive approach adopted by Armenia’s presidency. The framework is intended to ensure full and meaningful participation by governments, international organizations, the scientific and academic community, civil society, young people, women, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as well as the private sector.

Outlining the events planned for COP17, Robert Abisoghomonyan pointed to the “Leaders for Nature” summit. The meeting is expected to lead to the adoption of the political declaration “Yerevan Call for Action,” reaffirming the central importance of biodiversity for sustainable development, food security, climate resilience and well-being.

He also highlighted the first Global Review of collective progress toward implementing the goals and targets set by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. According to the presentation, the process will make it possible to assess progress achieved, identify remaining gaps and determine where stronger efforts are still needed.

Abisoghomonyan also presented Armenia’s initiatives within COP17. They include expanding positive environmental incentives, encouraging the exchange of experience on effective area-based conservation measures, developing biodiversity monitoring systems through new technologies, and strengthening international cooperation on the protection of mountain and freshwater ecosystems.

He concluded by reaffirming Armenia’s readiness to continue working with OSCE participating States and international partners to secure ambitious, forward-looking and practical outcomes at COP17 in Yerevan.
