“Until quite recently, we spoke about Armenia having a surplus of electricity. Now we must talk about the fact that Armenia may face a demand for electricity because AB plants are developing at a rapid pace, and these plants consume electricity in volumes beyond our expectations,” said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a press briefing, addressing the statements of the President of Azerbaijan regarding the arrival of Azerbaijani specialists who have studied the possibility of laying an electricity transmission line through Armenian territory.
“At this point, naturally, nothing has changed in our larger situation, but the plans that investors have for constructing new plants in the AB sector in Armenia compel us to think that we need to revisit our energy strategies to have capabilities that correspond to these new conditions and expectations. But overall, I want to say that our strategy is 100% energy independence,” he noted, adding that Armenia has resources for developing solar and storage plants.
According to the Prime Minister, this does not mean that we will be excluded from international electricity trade. “Sometimes we can export, sometimes import, including with Azerbaijan, we can have partnerships and cooperation in terms of exporting and importing electricity, as with all other countries — Turkey, Iran, Georgia, and so on.”
