Armenia has decided to forgo a referendum on EU membership by adopting the relevant law. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that they have examined the legal framework and found no violations regarding either Russia or the EAEU. He emphasized that the EAEU charter clearly outlines what a country must do to exit the union.
Pashinyan noted that if the Armenian National Assembly had not adopted the law, civil society would have gathered 350,000 signatures, which would have forced the country to hold a referendum. "By adopting this law, we have effectively abandoned the idea of a referendum, as this issue has not yet matured to the level where it can be formulated for our people," he said.
He added that this process is not against Russia or the EAEU, and Armenia highly values its relations with Russia.
