A tender has been announced for the design works of the Gyumri-Kars railway, the Minister of Territorial Administration announced today in Gyumri. David Khudatyan stated that the main construction will follow the approval of the project:
“We have announced a competitive process for the design works for the Akhurik section, and in this context, we are continuing our work at this moment,” the minister said, adding, “According to the procedures established by law, if we have winning organizations in the competition, we will move to the design phase as quickly as possible, and then also to the construction works competition and the actual construction phase.”
Last month, the mayor of Akyaka, adjacent to Shirak, told “Freedom” that construction is currently underway for the restoration of the Akyaka-Gyumri railway infrastructure, which, according to the official's assessment, will be completed in two to three months. The mayor of the city in the province of Kars also mentioned that a tender has already been announced for the construction of the land road from Akyaka to Gyumri.
On the Armenian side, there is still no talk of the start date for construction works. David Khudatyan only stated today that the tenders for the railway design and construction will be international:
“An international tender has been announced for the design works, considering that Armenian design and construction companies do not have experience in carrying out works of this scale, as in the case of bridges and tunnels, we usually go for international tenders for railways as well. In this case, yes, an international tender has been announced,” the minister noted.
According to preliminary estimates, the construction of the 21-kilometer section of the Gyumri-Kars railway on the Armenian side will require 15 million dollars.
