On August 23, parliamentary elections for the unicameral parliament, the Kurultai, began in Kazakhstan. These are the first parliamentary elections since the new constitution came into effect on July 1.
The new constitution of Kazakhstan, among other things, provides for a transition from a bicameral parliament (Senate and Majilis) to a unicameral parliament. A total of 12.6 million people have the right to vote in Kazakhstan. A total of 10,400 polling stations have been opened for voting both in the country and abroad. 145 members of parliament will be elected.
