The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) inflated claims of $110 billion in savings for the federal government:
The GAO report, requested last June, states that DOGE took credit for savings on its website's "Wall of Receipts," but these figures do not hold up:
- GAO found that of the 13,476 contracts DOGE claimed to have terminated, "no termination action" was taken on 2,503 of them;
- DOGE claimed $113 million in savings from 264 leases, but GAO found that the actual savings amounted to $53.5 million.
GAO recommended that the DOGE website should clearly state that the data may be unreliable.
