Drivers in France turn to rapeseed oil as a diesel substitute

With diesel at record highs, some motorists are looking for a cheaper alternative.

A sharp rise in diesel prices in France is pushing some motorists toward unconventional cost-cutting measures. According to BFMTV, some car owners have started filling their tanks with rapeseed oil in an effort to reduce fuel expenses.

The main reason is the price gap. A liter of rapeseed oil costs 1.53 euros, almost one euro less than regular diesel fuel.

Social media is also helping fuel interest in the trend. Videos showing young people filling cars with vegetable oil have already drawn more than 1 million views.

Still, not all drivers are willing to try it. Many are concerned about the risk of serious damage to the engine, especially the fuel supply system. In addition, France imposes a 200 euro fine for using fuel that does not comply with established standards.

On September 20, diesel prices in France hit a historic record of 2.41 euros per liter. Speaking on LCI, delegated minister for energy and government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said the government is preparing an additional financial support program for French citizens who use their cars for work.
