Ford Motor plans to move production of some Lincoln models from China to the USA starting in 2030, the company's CEO has announced. He stated that this decision was difficult but necessary to strengthen the automotive industrial base in the USA.
High tariffs are applied to gasoline engine vehicles and electric cars imported from China. Ford confirmed that the tariff on its main model, the Lincoln Nautilus, imported from China, is 52.5%.
“We made this decision immediately after the administration's policy was formed. We clearly understood what they wanted to achieve and what it meant for Ford,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley, referring to the tariffs.
In addition to tariffs, automakers have faced restrictions under the Connected Vehicle Rule, which prohibits the use of certain Chinese technologies and equipment in models sold in the USA. Farley noted that both regulatory requirements influenced Ford's decision, but he named tariffs as the main factor.
According to Farley, Lincoln vehicles produced in the USA will be sold domestically as part of a large-scale program to increase production volumes. At the same time, the company has not disclosed where exactly their production will be organized.
Competitor General Motors has announced that it will move the production of the Buick Envision from China to the USA starting in 2028.
