Fed Chairman Warsh expresses concern about inflation

Fed Chairman advocates for a 'quieter' central bank

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh expressed concern about elevated inflation during his speech at Jackson Hole, suggesting that interest rates may need to rise if price pressures do not ease.

Warsh avoided committing to forward guidance or signals regarding future monetary policy, instead focusing on his governance approach. "We should not indulge a regime in which market participants are looking primarily to the Fed for their next trade," he stated.

He acknowledged that "while this summer's inflation readings were better than expected, they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved."

Warsh emphasized the need for confidence that underlying inflation is moving toward the Fed's objective clearly and at sufficient speed.

Following his remarks, stock market indexes climbed, and Treasury yields rose significantly.

Warsh also expressed confidence in the economy, citing benefits from artificial intelligence.
