Gas reserves in Europe's underground storage have recently increased to 58.84%, according to the Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) association of European gas infrastructure operators.
However, this figure is 16.74 percentage points lower than the average level for the same day over the past five years.
Over the past seven days, the average daily net injection of gas into storage has been 269 million cubic meters, which is 22.2% lower than the five-year average.
The level of natural gas reserves in Europe is a key indicator for the global gas market. The total active capacity of the European Union's gas storage system is 109 billion cubic meters. Meanwhile, Europe remains the largest importer in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market.
Gas Infrastructure Europe brings together operators involved in the transportation, storage, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) sectors. The association's statistical database has included the operation of underground natural gas storage since 2011, and LNG reception and regasification facilities since 2012.
According to WindEurope, since the beginning of the month, wind energy, a major competitor to gas-fired thermal power plants, has accounted for an average of 13% of the region's electricity demand. For comparison, this figure was 14% in August 2025.
It is also expected that in August 2026, liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to Europe will reach about 6.4 million tons, which is 14% less than the same period last year.
