The European Union is discussing at least three options to break the deadlock over a new sanctions package against Russia. In recent weeks, the process of approving the 21st sanctions package has stalled, according to Bloomberg, citing informed sources.
The main obstacle to the agreement on the package has been Greece's position. Athens opposes measures that restrict the supply of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to third countries through European companies.
According to Bloomberg's sources, among the options being discussed are a 24-month delay in the entry into force of these restrictions, the complete exclusion of this provision, or the cancellation of the entire sanctions package.
One possible compromise could be the extension of the terms of existing contracts. Additionally, Bloomberg's interlocutors noted that the action of the price cap on natural gas could be extended, even if agreement on other proposals in the package is not reached.
