The European Central Bank said new euro banknotes will enter circulation across the euro area in the early 2030s. The regulator said the rollout of the new series will be gradual.
According to the ECB, the new banknotes will feature improved security elements, be more environmentally friendly and easier to use. The bank says the redesign is intended to strengthen the security and practicality of cash.
The ECB also said that around 10 million people living in Europe and beyond took part in a survey on the new banknote design. Participants were asked to assess 10 design options grouped under the themes “European culture” and “Rivers and birds.”
The ECB’s Governing Council will make the final decision on the design, taking into account the survey results, a technical assessment and recommendations from an independent jury. The bank said that decision is due by the end of 2026.
The ECB also clarified that euro banknotes already in circulation will remain legal tender and will continue to be used alongside the new series.
