EU Welcomes Aliyev's Proposal to Lay Electric Cable to Armenia

Ursula von der Leyen emphasizes the importance of regional cooperation

Yerevan: Mediamax: The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen congratulated the President of Azerbaijan on the "signing of a historic peace treaty with Armenia".

As reported by AzerTaj, in a statement following the meeting with Ilham Aliyev, Ursula von der Leyen specifically said:

"You have demonstrated leadership qualities in promoting peace and cooperation in the region, and this creates new opportunities for stability, trust, and prosperity. The EU firmly supports this process. Together, we can truly turn peace on paper into practical peace, and that is exactly why we are here working together today."

The head of the European Commission called the South Caucasus "one of the world's most important transport hubs, connecting Europe, the Caspian region, and Central Asia."

"Its strategic importance continues to grow, and Azerbaijan is assigned a central role in this process. Few countries have such a favorable position to promote regional cooperation and stability. Azerbaijan skillfully combines its strategic geographical position with growing economic, political, and regional influence," von der Leyen noted.

"In recent years, Azerbaijan has proven itself to be a reliable and trustworthy energy partner of the European Union. We have not forgotten Azerbaijan's assistance at a time when Russia used energy as a weapon and halted gas supplies to Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor has indeed strengthened Europe's energy security, and this is a remarkable success story. And I want to thank you for that," the head of the European Commission emphasized.

"We welcome your proposal to lay an electric cable to Armenia with great interest. This is a very interesting point," von der Leyen noted.
