The results of the referendum on choosing between the EU and the EAEU may upset Russia, says Simonian

Alen Simonian stated that Armenia will make its choice when the time comes

“If a referendum on Armenia's membership in the EU or the EAEU were held soon, Russia would be very upset to see the reaction of the Armenian population,”

said Alen Simonian, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, in an interview with the TV channel “Dozhd.”

“Even those who did not vote for our party are very offended by Russia's position during the 2020 war and the subsequent events, by the statements of various journalists, public and state figures, and by the statements of the Belarusian authorities,” he noted.

At the same time, Simonian clarified that Armenia will make its choice when the time comes:

“We will make our choice when this question becomes real. There are currently no concrete steps towards joining the European Union. We do not want and do not intend to leave the EAEU,” Simonian emphasized.

He assured that the request to Russia to transfer the management of the railways to a third party is not a political move:

“We ask the Russian side to show flexibility so that these railways operate. If it is not possible to find a way out of the situation, Armenia may go to court, as the operation of the railway is a matter of national security,” Simonian concluded.
