The Trump administration has returned nearly $100 billion to importers, which was previously collected as tariffs, until the US Supreme Court overturned the rates established under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This is evidenced by documents submitted to the US International Trade Court.
The returned amount is equivalent to about 60% of the total funds collected by the government, which totaled around $166 billion.
In February, the US Supreme Court ruled that the IEEPA did not grant the president the authority to impose such tariffs. As a result of this decision, the federal court ordered US authorities to return the money previously paid by importers.
According to CNBC, despite the court rulings, the Trump administration is attempting to reinstate that tariff policy using other legal mechanisms.
US President Donald Trump stated that these tariffs brought “hundreds of billions of dollars” to the state budget, and that the Supreme Court's decision simply forced the administration to apply “other methods” of collection.
