Court orders detention of Sedrak Kocharyan

Son of Armenia's second president detained

A court has ordered the detention of Sedrak Kocharyan, the eldest son of Armenia’s second president. His lawyer, Alexander Kochubayev, announced the decision, Factor.am reports.

The hearing on the motion to remand Kocharyan in custody began the previous day at 9:00 p.m., presided over by Judge Vardges Stepanyan. The decision on his detention was announced during the night.

Following searches conducted at several dozen addresses on August 25, Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan, Sedrak Kocharyan and four other people were arrested.

Robert Kocharyan has been charged with abuse of official powers, money laundering on an especially large scale and accepting a bribe on an especially large scale. Sedrak Kocharyan, in turn, has been charged with money laundering on an especially large scale, as well as aiding and abetting abuse of official powers and the acceptance of a bribe on an especially large scale.
