China has initiated its largest recall in history, affecting 3 million vehicles due to issues with door handles. Chinese regulators have ordered 11 electric vehicle manufacturers, including Tesla and Xiaomi, to conduct an unprecedented recall involving nearly 3 million vehicles. The recall, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation, is due to deficiencies in emergency door opening systems.
Complaints have focused on concealed door handles, which are difficult to access in an emergency, and the activation method is unclear, creating risks for passenger and driver evacuation. Nine of the 11 manufacturers will install warning labels on their vehicles, and all participants will release wireless software updates.
Tesla has the largest recall, involving approximately 2.98 million Model 3, Y, S, and X electric vehicles (both made in China and imported). The company will modify the handles and add an automatic window lowering system after an accident.
The measures are being taken against the backdrop of tightened safety regulations in China. Authorities had previously announced plans to ban concealed door handles used by Tesla starting in 2027.
