The Ministry of Industry of China has announced the introduction of mandatory safety requirements for vehicles equipped with conditionally automated and highly automated driving systems.
The new regulations will come into effect on July 1, 2027. They mandate that automated driving systems ensure a safety level that is comparable to that provided by a qualified and attentive driver.
According to the ministry's statement, the systems must not create unreasonable risks for the safety of vehicle passengers or other road users.
The standards apply to vehicles equipped with Level 3 and Level 4 automated driving systems. Level 3 systems require the driver to be ready to take control when requested by the system. Level 4 systems can perform all driving functions without human intervention under certain operating conditions or in specifically designated areas.
Automated parking systems are not included in these requirements.
