King Charles III of the United Kingdom is set to meet executives from leading artificial intelligence companies on Thursday and tell them that new technologies must work in people’s interests. The meeting comes as warnings about the potential dangers of AI are becoming more frequent.
According to Reuters, the king will host representatives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic and other companies. The talks are taking place amid concerns that AI safety measures are not keeping pace with the technology’s rapid advance.
In recent weeks, a broader debate has intensified over whether the industry can regulate AI development on its own or whether governments should force companies to slow the pace of development.

Reuters said Charles III plans to tell the executives that they need to reassure the public that autonomous AI agents will not strip people of control over their own lives.
Those expected to attend include Nvidia founder and chief executive Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder and president Demis Hassabis, OpenAI chief financial officer Sarah Friar, and UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan.
Paolo Benanti, an adviser to Pope Leo XIV who has previously called on governments to slow AI development, is also expected to take part, Reuters reported.
Debate over AI risks has intensified again after two Anthropic researchers warned that the rapid development of the technology could, in the foreseeable future, lead to humanity’s extinction.
