Heavy rains in Brazil, which have damaged the country's coffee plantations, may lead to a global shortage of arabica coffee beans. This was reported by Bloomberg.
The heavy rains in the South American country affect not only the quantity and quality of the harvest but also complicate the supply of coffee to other countries. Brazil accounts for about 45% of the world's arabica coffee production. According to the agency, this situation is already reducing the availability of high-quality coffee blends sold in major coffee shops, including Starbucks, Luigi Lavazza, and Ilycaffe.
“In the overwhelming majority of cases, problems arise with the quality of coffee beans, which leads to a higher degree of fermentation, significantly affecting the final beverage,” said Simão de Lima, CEO of Brazil's largest coffee producers' cooperative, Expocacer, to Bloomberg.
De Lima added that in 2026, about 20% of coffee beans in Brazil were washed away due to tropical heavy rains. Usually, this figure is around 5-7%.
According to Bloomberg's analysis, arabica coffee futures prices on the London ICE exchange have risen by 35% since June due to the growing deficit and declining quality.
