Microsoft co-founder, billionaire, and philanthropist Bill Gates plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year to propose measures to mitigate the growing risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI).
In an interview with Reuters, Gates stated that he believes China may agree to limit the release of potentially dangerous AI models if the U.S. takes the first step in this matter.
“The whole world will be watching this,” Gates said.
A representative of the Microsoft co-founder indicated that his team is working to finalize the meeting with Xi Jinping during Gates’ upcoming visit to China, which is tentatively scheduled for November.
Gates also wants to propose that countries monitor the capabilities of AI to create molecules and conduct biological attacks. According to him, this will not hinder the development of the technology sector.
AI Can Also Be Used for Attacks
Gates was more optimistic about AI prospects in January, but has since grown more concerned. The reasons are manifold: AI could not only displace workers but also be used for attacks and psychological manipulation of users.
Today, in his blog, Gates suggested creating an international organization to oversee the development of AI and its potential dangers.

Gates wrote that one of the world’s top priorities should be ensuring a future where AI does not exacerbate inequality and harm vulnerable groups.
