MP sees potential for new gas supplies through TRIPP

New gas supplies could be possible within the TRIPP framework

An additional source of gas supply for Armenia could be created within the TRIPP framework, said Civil Contract lawmaker Sargis Khandanyan.

“The TRIPP project is not only about the railway; it also concerns a gas pipeline. In other words, a gas pipeline will run through Armenian territory within its framework. And that is another opportunity as an additional source of gas,” Khandanyan said.

He added that although everything remains theoretical for now, implementing it in practice would not be difficult.

The Civil Contract party lawmaker did not rule out that, in this context, it could also become possible to supply gas directly from Azerbaijan to Armenia.

Addressing Russian gas, he said that if the need arises to revise the price, Armenia will discuss the matter with its Russian partners in a friendly format. At the same time, Khandanyan said diversification of supply sources is important in this sector.

The lawmaker also recalled the Armenian territorial administration and infrastructure minister’s recent visit to Iran, during which the possibility of increasing gas supply volumes was discussed.

Earlier, Armenian Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Davit Khudatyan said Yerevan does not view Iranian gas as an alternative to Russian gas.

On May 27, it emerged that Yerevan had received a letter from Moscow concerning the possible unilateral termination of an agreement on supplies of natural gas, petroleum products and unprocessed diamonds.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on June 11 that he found it difficult to imagine how the Russian side could unilaterally terminate the agreement on selling gas to Armenia.
