Authorities impose restriction on Sargsyan, rearrest Kocharyan

Armenia's third president is barred from leaving the country, while the second has been rearrested.

Armenia's third president, Serzh Sargsyan, has been barred from leaving the country as a preventive measure, according to Factor TV, citing the Anti-Corruption Committee.

On August 25, Armenia's second and third presidents were at the Anti-Corruption Committee in connection with the same criminal proceedings. Robert Kocharyan was arrested and taken to the investigative body, while Serzh Sargsyan was summoned there. The Anti-Corruption Committee is preparing to file a motion seeking Robert Kocharyan's detention, while Sargsyan has been barred from leaving as a preventive measure.

Robert Kocharyan remains at a medical center. After the 24-hour period of his arrest expired, law enforcement officers served Kocharyan with a new arrest order, according to Factor TV, citing its sources within law enforcement.

Under the new order, Robert Kocharyan was arrested again for the purpose of bringing him before a court. The criminal case under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Committee concerns alleged cases of money laundering on an especially large scale, abuse of official powers, and receiving a bribe on an especially large scale. After leaving the Anti-Corruption Committee, Armenia's third president told reporters that he would be able to speak about the charge against him after receiving the case materials.
