Former Armenian State Revenue Committee Chairman Gagik Khachatryan has been arrested, Investigative Committee spokesperson Kima Avdalyan said:
Earlier, the committee stated that a decision had been made to arrest Gagik Khachatryan as part of criminal proceedings initiated against him. Investigative actions were carried out at the apartments of Khachatryan and his son, as well as at the offices and branches of about 21 companies affiliated with them:
Proceedings to confiscate property of allegedly illicit origin belonging to Gagik Khachatryan and individuals associated with him began back in 2021-2022. According to information released by the Prosecutor General’s Office, authorities sought the confiscation from Khachatryan and about 25 individuals affiliated with him of 210 real estate properties, including 60 in Yerevan, 14 vehicles, stakes in 33 companies, as well as more than 40 billion drams:
The list of assets subject to confiscation also included a mansion belonging to Khachatryan’s family in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, U.S. Separate court proceedings concerning the confiscation of that property were conducted in the U.S:
In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice stated that an agreement had been reached regarding the property’s forfeiture:
On August 27, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan remarked: “Why do they catch some poor guy and send him to prison for 20 years, while Gagik Tsarukyan and Serzh Sargsyan are acquitted by Armenia’s judicial system? How? For free? How is it that Gagik Khachatryan is on trial, and the judge brazenly postpones the trial long enough to retire so that the entire legal process is reset? For free? Are you serious?”
