US natural gas market to set new records in 2026-2027

The EIA expects higher production, consumption and LNG exports.

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that natural gas supply and demand in the United States will reach record levels in 2026 and 2027. The expected increase covers production, domestic consumption and liquefied natural gas exports.

According to the agency, dry natural gas production will rise from 107.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2025 to 111.7 billion in 2026 and 115.9 billion cubic feet in 2027. Domestic consumption is projected to grow over the same period from 91.9 billion cubic feet per day to 92.2 billion and 94.3 billion cubic feet, respectively.

US LNG exports are also expected to expand. After 15.1 billion cubic feet per day in 2025, exports are forecast at 17.4 billion in 2026 and 18.6 billion cubic feet in 2027.

The EIA also expects gas inventories at the start of the winter season to stand about 5% above the five-year average, partly due to higher output from the Permian and Haynesville fields.

At the same time, US coal production is projected to fall to 496.7 million tons in 2027, the lowest level since 1963. With oil and coal consumption declining, carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are also expected to decrease.
