US lawmakers propose creating an artificial intelligence department

The proposal would also pause development of the most advanced AI systems until safety rules are set.

US Senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic House member Greg Casar are set to introduce a bill on Wednesday aimed at regulating the further development of artificial intelligence, according to Associated Press.

AP reports that the proposal calls for the creation of an artificial intelligence department and a ban on the creation of “artificial superintelligence.”

The agency, which reviewed the text of the bill, says the measure would also halt development of the most advanced AI systems until the new body — the artificial intelligence department — sets federal safety rules.

According to AP, the initiative has drawn support from many employees of leading AI companies.

“You don’t have to be a genius to say, ‘Slow down.’ Do we really want to create a superintelligence that, by becoming smarter than humans, could operate independently of human control?” Sanders said in an interview with AP.

In recent weeks, the United States has seen intensified debate over whether AI development should be slowed to ensure the technology does not pose a threat to humanity. Several leaders of major US companies in the sector have backed such steps.

President Donald Trump, for his part, has said he does not view artificial intelligence as a threat. On Saturday, he also announced plans to form a special structure — “artificial intelligence forces” — to take part in addressing issues related to the sector’s дальнейшее development.
