YEREVAN, August 20. /ARKA/. The US national debt has surpassed a record $40 trillion, according to RBC citing the US Treasury Department.
The borrowing volume exceeded the $39 trillion mark just five months ago. The Financial Times notes that the US national debt has increased from less than $6 trillion over the past two decades due to the financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The newspaper reports that the total debt burden has doubled in the last 10 years alone. The debt of investors outside the US federal government has exceeded $32 trillion, which is approximately equal to the size of the US economy, according to the Treasury Department.
