The US has officially removed Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, according to the US Secretary of the Treasury. "The Treasury is fulfilling President Trump's promise to give the Syrian people the opportunity to achieve greatness. Today's steps will promote additional investments in Syria to contribute to political and economic stability," said US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant.
Syria was one of four countries on the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism, alongside Cuba, Iran, and North Korea. This status was imposed on Syria in 1979 and led to restrictions on US aid, the supply of defense products, and the export of certain dual-use goods. Last month, during the NATO summit, following a meeting between Trump and Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Trump administration informed Congress of its intention to remove Syria's status as a state sponsor of terrorism. Over the past year, the Trump administration has issued orders to lift a number of American sanctions against Syria, eased export restrictions, revised the terrorist designation of the former armed group al-Sharaa, and worked with Congress to lift sanctions imposed under the "Caesar Act" regarding Syria.
