America’s Next Strategic Partner Is Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan: The Pivotal Power of Central Asia

Uzbekistan, strategically located between China, Russia, Afghanistan, and the Caspian Sea, is experiencing rapid economic growth with a population nearing 40 million. The United States has a significant opportunity to expand its influence in Uzbekistan through investments, critical minerals, trade, and the Middle Corridor, providing Tashkent with alternatives to dependence on China and Russia.

As Uzbekistan celebrates 35 years of independence on September 1, Washington should not only congratulate its people and government but also recognize a strategic opportunity. Uzbekistan is opening its economy, improving relations with its neighbors, and seeking greater integration with global markets.

Since President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took office in 2016, Uzbekistan has liberalized its foreign exchange regime, reduced trade barriers, and encouraged foreign investment.

In 2025, real GDP grew by 7.7%, and in the first quarter of 2026, it reported an 8.7% year-over-year growth. Investments surged to $43 billion in 2025.

The U.S. and Uzbekistan have launched a joint investment platform aimed at supporting strategic investment projects.
