Opposition deputy Edgar Gazarayan stated that almost all regional universities in Armenia are at risk of closure. He mentioned that starting from September 1, 229 public schools in Armenia will be unable to operate as they will be closed.
According to Gazarayan, the government has developed a project under which universities with fewer than 4,000 students will be closed. He emphasized that this applies to almost all regional universities, except for the Shirak region.
Gazarayan also noted that the government intends to close universities to build the Academic City, but the project has not yet been implemented, and nothing has been constructed on the site.
He also mentioned that the Academic City is planned to be built in the 17th district of Yerevan, where up to 16 universities — both state and private — are expected to be located.
