Tesla plans to tighten the identification process for users of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system and may limit the sharing of subscriptions.
The 4.58.5 version of Tesla's mobile app includes mentions of an 'Identity Verification' feature, indicating the development of a new driver recognition system that may somewhat resemble Apple's Face ID.
Since 2021, Tesla has been using an in-cabin camera for driver monitoring. Initially, Elon Musk stated that the main purpose of the camera was to protect robotaxis from vandalism. Later, the company clarified that video recordings are not sent to Tesla unless the user has activated the data-sharing feature.
Independent tests conducted in 2022 showed that the camera-based traffic monitoring system does not always work effectively.
In the future, such a system could be used to confirm the identity of the driver or even the passenger, but a more controversial option is also being discussed.
For this reason, some experts suggest that Tesla may choose a Netflix-like approach and more strictly control who is actually using the FSD subscription.
However, such an idea has obvious technical limitations.
The in-cabin cameras can relatively effectively monitor the driver's attention, but in terms of biometric identification, they significantly lag behind specialized solutions.
