OpenAI's newest AI model is 54% more token efficient on agentic coding, Altman tells CNBC

OpenAI releases GPT-5.6 Sol model, which is 54% more efficient

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told CNBC that the company's latest GPT-5.6 Sol model is 54% more efficient on agentic coding tasks. The company is rolling out its latest models, GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna, broadly on July 9 after an initial limited launch.

Altman noted that OpenAI worked closely with senior officials in the U.S. government ahead of the model's deployment. He stated that the government conducted tests and raised issues for the company to address.

"If you want broad access, which we do, and you have powerful models, you really want to be confident in your safety claims, because otherwise the world is going to get uncomfortable very fast," Altman said.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit organization and gained mainstream recognition with the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022. The company is currently valued at $852 billion.
