YEREVAN, July 7. Membership in the European Union is not a sprint but a marathon, said the head of the EU delegation in Yerevan, Vasilis Maragos, discussing the timelines for Armenia's potential accession to the EU.
"This is not a process that can be completed quickly just by focusing on it. It is a marathon that has repeatedly proven its effectiveness, bringing concrete results and tangible benefits," Maragos said in an interview with Armenian Public Television.
According to him, the EU's partnership with Armenia will continue to strengthen in various formats.
On March 26, 2025, the Armenian parliament approved a law to begin the process of joining the European Union, and on April 4, the document was signed by the president.
On December 2, 2025, the parties approved the strategic agenda for the Armenia-EU partnership in Brussels. Yerevan stated that it is aimed at supporting Armenia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, democratic reforms, and economic stability.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan previously stated that Armenia is moving towards EU standards but still maintains membership in the EAEU. He noted that if it becomes impossible to combine both directions, a further choice will be made together with the citizens of the country.
