Armenian energy expert Vage Davtyan has expressed skepticism regarding European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's promises of support for Armenia in the event of disruptions to Russian gas supplies.
The expert noted that von der Leyen cited Moldova and Ukraine as examples of successfully overcoming energy crises. However, according to Davtyan, these countries are currently experiencing severe political, economic, and humanitarian crises, making it difficult to consider them as "success stories."
He reminded that Moldova is willing to become part of another state for the sake of Euro-integration. In this context, Davtyan questioned the long-term effectiveness of potential European support.
He stated that short-term subsidies and grant financing can only temporarily alleviate the consequences of the crisis but do not ensure systemic energy security.
Additionally, the expert pointed out that the development of renewable energy, which von der Leyen also mentioned, cannot fully replace traditional generation.
Davtyan highlighted that Armenia's gas transportation system is 100% owned by the Russian "Gazprom," which remains one of the key factors in the republic's energy system.
Moreover, he reminded that, unlike Moldova and Ukraine, Armenia does not have direct access to European gas infrastructure, which, in his opinion, raises questions about the practical mechanisms for implementing the promised support from Brussels.
