Germany plans to create a strategic gas reserve worth €1.5 billion

The reserve will help ensure energy supply in emergencies

The German government plans to allocate €1.5 billion to create a strategic reserve of natural gas with a volume of 2.3 billion cubic meters. This was reported by Reuters, citing a source.

The reserve is intended to help the country ensure energy supply in emergencies, such as diversions at energy infrastructure facilities or sharp shortages in the global market. The Ministry of Economy is working on the program. According to the agency, the project could be approved by mid-August.

The volume of such reserves will be about 2.3 billion cubic meters, which corresponds to approximately 10% of the total capacity of all existing gas storage facilities in the country. The creation of the reserve, the purchase of gas, and its injection during 2027-2028 are estimated to cost between €1.2 billion and €1.5 billion. The annual maintenance cost of the reserve will be between €150 million and €180 million.
