The European Union is discussing with the authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan how Brussels can best support the development of transport routes in the South Caucasus.
According to Armenpress, this was stated by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, Magdalena Grono, during a press briefing with journalists in Yerevan, speaking about the security situation in the South Caucasus and the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“The progress in building sustainable peace in the region has been incredibly impressive, and of course, we, as the European Union, strive to be strong partners for the Republic of Armenia, but also for Azerbaijan, so that this peace becomes a stable reality that benefits all people,” emphasized Grono.
The EU Special Representative also highlighted that Brussels supports the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process in various ways and forms.
“Of course, there is political support for the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan as they advance the peace process, but there are also efforts to support specific directions where discussions are ongoing that can benefit people on both sides. Thus, we are certainly considering how we can best support humanitarian issues as part of this, and in this regard, demining is paramount. It can have an impact directly on the affected communities. It can also have significant implications if it comes to the agenda of connectivity and broader unblocking of the region, as new transit lines are being built,” noted the EU Special Representative, referring to the modern demining equipment that arrived in Armenia today, donated by the European Union.
Grono reiterated that the agenda of regional connectivity and broader unblocking of the South Caucasus is also a focus of the EU.
“We are discussing with the authorities of Armenia, but also, of course, with partners from Azerbaijan, how best to support the development of these routes so that all countries are involved, and all residents of the communities located along these routes can benefit from it, and of course, we will make a significant contribution to what is a priority for the EU: the transport project of the ‘Middle Corridor’ that connects Asia with Europe through the South Caucasus,” emphasized Magdalena Grono.
