Official importers state that the car import market in Armenia is in a chaotic state and is unregulated. According to Artem Petrosyan, head of the Armenian Association of Official Car Manufacturers (AAOC), they propose to certify all imported vehicles, both for legal entities and individuals.
The certification would involve checking vehicle safety systems, identifying and documenting structural changes, and assessing compliance with environmental standards, among other things. Petrosyan notes that the law already requires this, but the government is not consistent in enforcement.
In a discussion at the Hetq studio with Artem Petrosyan, we talked about why the certification of imported vehicles is necessary, why consumers should pay extra for it, who will benefit and who will suffer from it. We also discussed whether the certification will become just another formal document, similar to the often superficial technical inspection certificate.
